What is Kickboxing?
The term “kickboxing” was created by a Japanese boxing promoter in the 1950s, a term referring to a combination of Muay Thai boxing and karate. This trend gained its popularity within America in the 1970’s, where tournaments began to form from this popular sport. It really excelled when ESPN started broadcasting matches in 1979. Ever since, kickboxing has spread, with kickboxing classes, centres, academies and worldwide tournaments being set up. Kickboxing was almost accepted into the Olympic Games in 2008 due to its popularity and is expected to be accepted in the future.
Although there are a few variations of this energetic sport, Kickboxing is a individual sport which basically combines the punches of boxing with the kicks of karate. Some competitive kickboxers practice the sport against opponents in the ring, whilst other fitness enthusiasts practice kickboxing as an aerobic workout. Regardless of this, kickboxing is a challenging sport, suitable teenagers looking to get fit. It covers a wide variety of performance capacities and principles of training which have health related benefits. Over the past several decades, kickboxing has become an exciting sport to watch and to practice.

Health and Performance Capacities
Exercise is a vital key to health and wellbeing for teenagers as they grow. Kickboxing in particular is a good form of exercise due to its high intensity workouts which increases fitness. By using cardio-vascular routines, kickboxing raises your heartbeat and gets you sweating. This is actually beneficial to your body by not only improving you health but increasing oxygen flow which makes you feel more alive. Kickboxing is not only good for your overall health but research shows it targets and improves many training principles vital for growing teens. Because of its sequence of moves, kickboxing can improve your coordination over time. You may also find your balance improving as you do learn the basis of kicking and developing your core strength. The cool-down periods that conclude kickboxing classes also focus on a lot of stretching to help warm down the muscles, and you could find and increase in your flexibility. By incorporating a large variety of fitness routines, kickboxing targets different areas of training principles which has an overall effect on your fitness and well being.
Classes and Benefits
A popular venue is the North side Boxing Centre, which is located at 67 Robinson Road Nundah, Brisbane QLD roughly 20 minutes from Brisbane city. Classes are held weekly, Monday and Wednesday 6pm and Tuesday and Thursday 5:30pm, each lasting roughly an hour. With only $9 a class, this would be ideal for students looking for a fun afternoon workout that’s more flexible than a team sport. Due to this variety of hours, students can also control how often they wish to train. However, even during a single, hard hitting 1 hour training session participants will still find a variety of fitness and exercises, using different fitness routines in order to target different areas of the body. The class provides you with boxing gloves, bags, skipping ropes and space to push up, jump and squat attempting to aim towards a progressive overload. Along with this variety, kickboxing also encorporates the principle of specificity as during the core training session the classes practises and targets on the main aspect of kickboxing; which is the powerful and accurate punches and kicks.
For those struggling to find transportation, time or money to afford these kickboxing classes but are still interested in participating in a casual workout, here is a quick 10-minutes cardio kickboxing routine You can do this workout, any time anywhere and still get the health benefits it supplies!
Socio-cultural factors
Although, kickboxing doesn't obtain large media advertisement it’s important to get the message out for everyone to give it a try. There are large range of local facilities that hold casual weekly for you to have some fun with family and friends; there are also more intermediate academies for member wishing to further pursue this sport. Due to its ever-growing positive response from the sociocultural community, kickboxing is a highly recommended sport for not only teenage girls but anyone looking for a fun challenging workout with long-term benefits. With summer coming up, I, personally, am taking these classes more often.
